It had been a long, dreary day when I finally returned home.  I was a bit hungry, but it was already after nine in the evening, so I just grabbed some leftovers from the day before.  I went through my normal nightly routine, making sure my teeth were brushed and whatnot, and after putting on my pajamas, I just hopped into bed.  I was hoping for a relaxing, well deserved sleep, and my eyes closed even as I hit the pillow.

And yet, something bothered me, a scratching sound at first, or at least I thought it was, coming from outside.  I passed it off as some animal, perhaps my neighbor's cat, since I often saw it around, that, or some other critter.  That set me at ease, only it was a rather audible scratching, sounding like something was scraping along the outside wall of my house.

Aggravated, I got out of bed, and looked out my window.  I couldn't see anything, though the moonlight wasn't all that bright.  To get a better look, I unhitched the latch, and opened it, poking my head outside.  My room was on the second floor, and had a pretty good vantage of my yard.  Nothing out of the ordinary was all I could see, so I closed it, and went back to bed.  I figured I was just getting worked up over nothing, so just closed my eyes.

Before long, the scratching started again, only this time...there was a whisper.

At least, what sounded like one.  I couldn't make out anything audible, and sounded distant.  Sort of like a faint, long, raspy sigh.  My eyes opened immediately and looked around the room immediately after turning on the nearby light.  There was nothing, and the scratching ceased.  I was in a bit of a fright though, not knowing what I had just heard, or what made it.

I went back to my window and looked out, wondering if a neighbor, or someone else was walking about outside.  Again though, I didn't see anything.  I closed the window back up, feeling a bit of a chill outside, and sighed to myself.  It must have just been a long day, and I was overworked as it was.

I didn't lay back down immediately though, but sat on my bed.  I rubbed my face, perplexed, yet tired.  After several minutes, I turned the light back out, and crawled under the covers.

I didn't close my eyes immediately, or want to fall asleep right away.  I wanted to say I knew I was just getting worked up over nothing, but a part of me wanted to make sure that this wasn't just in my head, whatever it was.  I watched two minutes pass by on my electronic clock … before I heard it again.

The scratching was at my back door, and with it, I swear I could hear the same faint, eerie, rather distant whisper.  There was no mistaking this time.  I was wide awake, or rather, was awake enough, but I certainly was then.

I bolted out of bed and opened the window to look out, though couldn't see very well.  I didn't see anything, no shape, no movement.  The same was true around my yard, or what I could see of it.  I tried to steady my breathing, feeling in a bit of a cold sweat.  It took me a while to find the resolve to do so, but I was determined to find out what was going on, so went downstainrs.

I first checked the back door, turning on the lights outside, and seeing nothing.  I was lightly tempted to open the door, but didn't, instead, just making sure it was locked.  I hurried to the front door, also making sure it was locked, and looked out the windows there.  Still I saw nothing.

I roamed around the first floor, looking out different windows, and seeing nothing.  I did this several times.  It didn't make any sense.  I felt as though something might be wrong with me.

After a while though, I managed to calm down.  I might have just been thinking I heard something, at least, that's what I reasoned.  Tepidly, I walked my way up the stairs, back to my room, and to my bed.  I swallowed, getting my nerves together, and gradually walked the last few steps to bed.  After a while, I turned out the light, and lay down.

It took me several more minutes to finally force myself to close my eyes, just wanting to sleep, and let this matter pass.  I hoped it would anyway.

I heard a little more scratching though, a little louder on the outer wall, and again, the eerie whisper.  This time though, I could make some of it out.

"...You...leh...ooow...nn...ok..."

With a shout I jumped out of my bed, in a it of a panic.  Yet, even as I did, it all ceased.  The scratching, the faint whisper, all of it...gone in an instant.  My heart was racing.  In a mixture of fear and anger, I went to my window, opened it, and looked out.

"Who the heck is out there?!  Show yourself!" I called out, looking.  "Who's there?!"

There was no reply, no movement that suggested anything was there.  There was only the dark, dimly lit by the cloud covered moon and stars, a faint wind, and a light chill.  I must have remained out there looking for several minutes, seeing nothing, before finally slamming the window shut in a bit of a fit.  By then, I was calmed down a bit, and backed away, in a huff returning to my bed.  I rolled on my side and forced my eyes shut, not wanting to think myself mad.

This time, there was nothing.  For nearly ten minutes I lay there, as if waiting for it, but it didn't come.  By then, my sleepiness was really setting in, and I felt myself drifted off, something I by then was more than ready to welcome.

I think it was when I was just fading into slumber that I heard, faintly, the scratching, creeping closer, yet, in my fading state, it sounded further off than it was.  I also heard the whisper, distant, in a way, and yet, close.  I was too dreary to do anything about it, though, simply wanting to sleep.

That is, until I heard something start to slide.  I didn't think much of it until I found myself waking a little more.  As I came to, the room felt colder, I heard a bit of scratching, and heard, again, the whisper.  It still sounded faint, distant.

Only it was above me.

I felt my eyes shoot opened, and I was about to leap out of bed in a fright, were I able.  Almost the moment I came to full alertness I felt my entire body freeze.  An icy chill passed over me, and found myself unable to move, unable to even breath.

My eyes were stuck forward, I could only stare straight ahead.  I realized the chill feel strongest on my neck, as if some light, airy fingers were holding my by the neck.  I felt a presence behind me, of what I couldn't say, only that it was there.  That, and that I felt it move closer.

The whisper came again, sounding far off and unnatural, yet it was right above my ear.  It spoke clearly, with no mistaking it's slow, deliberate words.  It's voice chilled me almost as much as its touch.

"You left the window unlocked."
This is just a bit of flash fiction I wrote, based on a similar style to the short stories of Creepy Pasta. I really haven't gone to that site much, but might more, as it seems like there are a lot of creative horror ideas there. As far as this story goes, just consider it as an attempt to create a short, ideally chilling piece of fiction. I've only written one...sort of scary piece before, but there was a bit of silliness with it too. Still, the horror genre is one I really haven't touched, and probably will more.

I really haven't written much in quite some time, and I think part of that is because I've felt a little stagnant with a lot of the GT or Legacy pieces I've either been working on or need to work on. So, when things start to feel stagnant, it's good to try something different. Any feedback would be appreciated, too. Happy reading.
